<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzh1Kp3N_kTfm3ujEkDDe_D8pSL-2_vE3Twcv3XYI9pLFQQaT8975sAw9lzAigx53zCcbpT-pc8jQzU3hQSA6UQqsfJ1OLqanwZktojoPCXHm-n7y36nYay91NRyTH3iiRMzOGR3N6qnc/s320/max.jpg" width="215" /></div>
<br />
The tragedy of <i>Max</i> is that it could have, and should have, been a good movie. The dog, played by Carlos, Jagger, Pax, and others, is fantastic, as one would expect from canine actors of Birds and Animals Unlimited. The production values are high, the budget there. Even one really memorable moment when a boy and a dog who need each other suddenly realize that truth under the glow of fireworks.<br />
<br />
But there is not much else positive to say about <i>Max</i>. The entire film is destroyed by the kind of not only amateurish, but actually embarrassing writing which hounds “dog movies”. When you’re sitting in the theater thinking of better, smarter, or more moving things for the characters to say as you watch, while they spout lines a third-grader might put into a “write a script for class” assignment, you know it’s a dog of a film.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVDfAdHZ83S8fpECKv2AMKCVUfgLTHneF9fqpiVi0E2Fwce1lguxZnWD2CBeFQwMV-Eh1j9p_dXAAAtCH9_w-0guhx1az9MdcA5WxTkiPbq7EiELZZP2iou4uUVawy7wmazvB1gfVVahg/s320/max2.jpg" width="213" /></div>
<br />
The acting is surprisingly bad at times, though that may also be a product of the material the poor actors had to work from. The story is ridiculously long-winded and meanders so far away from the core (a traumatized military dog returning to live with his dead handler’s family), it feels like the producer had two screenplays to produce, a limited budget, and decided to merge the films. One about a dog and a grieving family, one about gun smuggling and a bike squad of kids trying to stop them.<br />
<br />
Ironically, it would have been easy to cut 20 or 30 minutes and greatly improve these issues. There are many set-up bits of information, relationships, and story which never pan out to anything and the whole film drags horribly.
The heart and soul of the dog story gets so lost, there are non-dog movies out there in which the plot revolves more around the dog. <i>Sightseers</i> (2012) and <i>Seven Psychopaths</i> (2012) come to mind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="188" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRRLDMJeVuMMDz9_vycnRgd0WiGUEGYhU-vc_HJ_6NzvzWyLhvq7GGGfRPFTzT093pkyubYrt6Do-K8TROYCaBgWArzGkqAwvk79BIOjnh6kyQAM2Jf6wGD87rUjkt21K9sdgpYGdVmcI/s320/8153728_G.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<br />
The film also struggles with audience. It was deliberately kept to a (quite violent) PG level. This was, perhaps, the death knell for an already bad movie. To experience a true sense of what the dog went through in war, then later conflict and danger elements with the family and gun traffickers, <i>Max</i> should have been PG-13. To clean up the subject matter, we are left with a storyline that is unsuitable for children, yet has nearly no appeal for adults. This has been classically done before with another dog film, <i>Radio Flyer</i> (1992)—a kids’ movie for grownups. At least <i>Radio Flyer</i> had a cinematic spark and heart at its core, plus great actors, which has kept it alive through the years.<br />
<br />
If you love Belgian Malinois, or dog movies in general, it's worth seeing on the small screen (where you could fast forward through half of it). If not, give this dog an honorable discharge.<br />

<br />
But there's something wrong with this reel:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsMMZRp8iMUve90eSot4Xh75ymeGQNgMtrND6dug9nnGDuFB8dwXAmDn7MUTUEEp5w4ZN1aGTNfC3EQq-s9mcP_s4hdjgxF48LOsgtOVyWSfUkSb6thocKomK3cF0oPmtJ0v_N3TYC7sI/s400/IMG_3979.JPG" width="400" /></div>
<br />
Spot it? The picture's not very clear so here are some clues:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIKBu2MjF1zJKOTYv-eUvMKRDV7mSY3l-VWzoTM63_wgCde7V5lCJtVWn2J7JOpxVvFRcsxnY0AlQ3-Dqu9ZyUNYy3mCjQ3QDjO0h0hhCxGO8qZWj_fROH3Eiuv_O6evKgGUkOo3paaqg/s400/AgainstSky.png" width="400" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes, Irish Wolfhound fanciers take note—<i>Against a Crooked Sky </i>costars a handsome, fawn Irish Wolfhound named B'ar Killer. What he's doing in nineteenth century Utah is never explained.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"B'ar Killer" was trained by Harold Packer, best known for <i>Where the Red Fern Grows</i> (1974). Here are more scenes with the big hero, who, though he's in the movie for only a short time, twice saves the life of the human lead.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
These three beautiful portraits show us heroes of modern canine films. Dogs who work for us, believe in us, love us, and never give up on us.<br />

These Border Collie heroes, painted by <a href="http://chicamiau.deviantart.com/art/Rex-and-Fly-354916509?q" target="_blank">Chicamiau</a>, not only put in a 40+ hour week for their farmer, they shape the destiny of a little pig who longs to grow up and be just like them.<br />

In 1987, Japan’s most famous dog, Hachikō, a cream Akita, was immortalized with a beautiful film paying tribute to the dog who waited for his dead guardian to return to their meeting point at Shibuya Station. For ten years.<br />
<br />
In 2009 Hollywood released a new adaptation of the Hachikō story with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0031RAOVY/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0031RAOVY&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20"><i>Hachi: A Dog's Tale</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0031RAOVY" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />. This Canada/UK coproduction is not truly a dog film, but worth a look by any Reel Dogs fans for the costarring mixed breed, "Marilyn," played by Charlie and trained by Sherry Davis.<br />
<br />
<i>Snow Cake</i> is the story of a high-functioning autistic woman brought tragic news by a stranger who accidentally becomes a part of her life. A life previously shared closely only with her adult daughter and her dog.<br />

Even when an adult story is adapted into a dog movie, it’s often kept to a PG rating—such as <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001REZM6K/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001REZM6K&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20">Marley & Me</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B001REZM6K" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
</i> (2008).<br />
<br />
Yet movie dogs can be so much more. From the silver screen Hollywood dog heroes like Luke, Strongheart, Rin-Tin-Tin, and Asta, to the animal horror trend of the 1970s and 1980s, to canine sidekicks in modern comedy and drama, Reel Dogs are truly for all ages and all audiences.<br />

<br />
One of the most recognizable icons of the movie dog world for grown-ups is Cujo. This vivid portrait by <a href="http://christopher-manuel.deviantart.com/" target="_blank">Christopher-Manuel</a> captures the lovable Saint Bernard turned killer who still chills audiences today. Based on the Stephen King novel, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000T5O48U/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000T5O48U&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20">Cujo</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000T5O48U" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i>
was released in 1983 after animal horror films had already been through their Hollywood heyday with movies like <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004TDTO/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00004TDTO&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20">Jaws</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00004TDTO" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i>

<br />
Some films keep their PG rating without ever really being child’s play: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000633U5/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0000633U5&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20"><i>White Fang</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0000633U5" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> (1991) is the Walt Disney adaptation of Jack London’s famed wolf-dog novel. This illustration by <a href="http://inarah.deviantart.com/" target="_blank">Inarah</a> shows White Fang (played by the extraordinary Jed) in one of many fights throughout the movie that are brought about by human brutality.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Recently, a German Shepherd Dog once more captured the hearts of adult movie goers in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013FDM7E/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0013FDM7E&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20"><i>I Am Legend</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0013FDM7E" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> (2007). Samantha (played by Abbey) is captured here by <a href="http://emlis.deviantart.com/" target="_blank">Emlis</a> as "Sam" copilots for her best friend (Will Smith) in this post-apocalyptic drama.<br />
<br />
These artists bring vividly to life the fact that dog movies take many forms and tell many stories. Dogs appear in every genre, from horror to sci-fi, and play every imaginable role—from background ambiance to killer to hero to talking alien from outer space. Like life itself, the movies just wouldn’t be the same without them.<br />

<br />
Also known as <i>Koirankynnen leikkaaja</i><br />
<br />
Ever seen a motion picture starring a Finnish Spitz?<i> Dog Nail Clipper</i> is a Finnish movie from director Markku Pölönen, filmed in Joensuu, Finland, also a filming location for the classic WWI drama <i>Doctor Zhivago</i> (1965).<br />
<br />
<i>Dog Nail Clipper</i> tells the story of a British soldier who suffers a brain injury in World War Two and finds himself in the Finnish countryside looking for work. A friend tells him of the trouble he’s having with his dog’s overlong dewclaws and soon worries of the dog fill his mind as much as the war.<br />
<br />
The film is available in the U.S. and Canada with English subtitles on a PAL format DVD.<br />

<br />
In 1895 the first film exhibited to a paying audience featured two dogs: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005YUO9/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00005YUO9&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20"><i>Employees Leaving the Lumière Factory</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00005YUO9" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
a.k.a. <i>La Sortie des usines Lumière</i> (1895). It wasn’t until ten years later that a dog starred in a his own short. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005YUO9/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00005YUO9&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20"><i>Rescued by Rover</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00005YUO9" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
(1905) was a sensation in Great Britain and the idea of a dog playing a dramatic role in motion pictures was born.<br />
<br />
Years later, movie dogs began appearing regularly in short films from New York, then Hollywood. Throughout the 1910s Hollywood dogs were mostly comedic players, from Keystone Teddy to Luke and Brownie. The legendary Charlie Chaplin was one of many stars to recognize the tremendous comic potential of dogs on screen.<br />

<a href="http://amberchrome.deviantart.com/art/Strongheart-193011872" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbu9YyJRBhiihQPNLDfwDWQ5Dnfb3IZPWFuAMK7-ynnAw6Pp2-lI36vc77EGSyS13dIQ4d_ycqz8KrGrTJs6ZpVpByttKG2W0oGIt_1RRsFhy8eVqhwklihKtXpI2QzyvW5AGua5bzeQU/s400/strongheart_by_amberchrome-d36wwww.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Strongheart was largely responsible for recasting Reel Dogs as dramatic players in the 1920s: heroes of the silver screen who rescued women and children, drove away bad guys, and were wrongly accused of something or other (often sheep killing) in every single film. This portrait sketch of Strongheart is by <a href="http://amberchrome.deviantart.com/" target="_blank">amberchrome</a>. You can see Strongheart today in one surviving film from the era: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00422UC5K/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00422UC5K&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20"><i>The Return of Boston Blackie</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00422UC5K" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
(1927).<br />
<br />
After Strongheart and Rin-Tin-Tin paved the way for feature films wholly centered around canine characters, dog hero wannabes popped up in nearly every studio. Many did become well known and by the 1930s there were dozens of A- and B-list dog stars and their equally famed trainers.<br />

<br />
One of the top Hollywood canines of the 1930s was another comedic actor with an impeccable sense of timing and devilish twinkle in his eye: Skippy, a Wire Fox Terrier, was rechristened Asta after the famous character he played in the <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009GX1C4/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0009GX1C4&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20">Thin Man</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0009GX1C4" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i>

Also known as: <i>The Lady with the Little Dog, Dama s sobachkoj, Die Dame mit dem Hündchen</i>, etc.<br />
<br />
This 1960 Soviet Union film, featuring a white German Spitz Mittel in a co-starring role, is based on a short story by Russian author Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, first published in 1899. Despite the title, the little dog plays a small role and is primarily used as a means to identify the woman he's with (Iya Savvina). (A feeling so many dog people can relate to today: we remember the name and appearance of the dog, but who is that person attached to the leash?)<br />

Ranger was one of the many German Shepherd Dogs who tried, not very successfully, to compete with Rin-Tin-Tin and Strongheart in the 1920s. Luckily, Grapevine Video released <i>Tracked</i> on DVD several years ago so this one of Ranger's dozen-odd films is available to the public.<br />

<i>
Umberto D.</i> is a dramatic Italian film about old age pensioner Umberto D. Ferrari (Carlo Battisti) faced with losing both is home and his dog when he cannot pay his rent and is admitted to the hospital.
Flike, the dog, a smooth-coated terrier cross played by Napoleone, is the one constant, nonjudgemental, loving figure in Ferrari’s life.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=redobl-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=B00005JN2B&ref=tf_til&fc1=D52A33&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=D52A33&bc1=FEFDFA&bg1=FEFDFA&npa=1&f=ifr" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></div>
<br />
This month’s honorable mention is French, tiger film, <i>Two Brothers</i> (a.k.a. <i>Deux frères</i>). Filmed in Thailand, Cambodia, and France, <i>Two Brothers</i> was the creation of Jean-Jacques Annaud, known for the sweeping and beautiful animal films <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000IQBE/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00000IQBE&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20"><i>The Bear</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00000IQBE" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />

About 30 tigers were called on to play the parts of brothers Songha and Kumal, as well as the other tigers in the film. CGI and puppetry were also employed, though the real thing gets the majority of screen time.<br />

<br />
Based on the classic children’s novel by Sheila Burnford, <i>The Incredible Journey</i> tells the story of three pets, a Labrador Retriever, a Bull Terrier, and a Siamese, who travel hundreds of miles across the Canadian wilderness, hoping to return home to their family.<br />
<br />
A massive animal production with little screen time from humans, the film was remade by Disney in 1993 as <i>Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey</i>.<br />

The animal cast in the original film was managed by one of Hollywood’s most prolific trainers of the 1960s and the go-to trainer for dozens of Disney films, William Koehler. Koehler later wrote a book on his experiences working with the studio: <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0876058101/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0876058101&linkCode=as2&tag=redobl-20">The Wonderful World of Disney Animals</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=redobl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0876058101" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i>.<br />

<br />
Charles Eisenmann was best known for his work with London and the TV series <i>The Littlest Hobo</i>, but the Eisenmann educated German Shepherds did far more than one film and show.
Among them, <i>The Billion Dollar Hobo</i>.<br />
<br />
Eisenmann’s Toro was supposed to play top dog opposite Tim Conway in this fanciful comedy. When Toro needed surgery shortly before filming was to commence, Bo, a far less experienced dog who, for reasons unknown, had never barked in his life, got the part.<br />
<br />
At the beginning of the film Bo is assigned by his human to supervise the bumbling Vernon Praiseworthy (Conway) as he rides the rails and tries to prove he's worthy of a large inheritance. Bo soon discovers his new charge is even more thick-headed than most humans, but he perseveres in rescuing Praiseworthy from himself and puts in a stellar performance at the same time.<br />
<br />
Besides the handsome Bo, <i>The Billion Dollar Hobo</i> has the added distinction of being one of the very few films to costar a Shar Pei.<br />
